NSHC’s June 2022 ThreatRecon roundup identified three SectorA clusters, the report’s North Korea/DPRK-relevant section, among 34 threat actor groups observed from May 21 to June 20. SectorA02 targeted people working on North Korea-related policy issues in South Korea with spear-phishing emails impersonating a broadcaster and carrying malicious HWP documents tied to a talk invitation. SectorA05 used spear phishing against broadcasting-sector workers across South Korea, the Philippines, India, Hong Kong, and China, while SectorA06 used Windows LNK malware disguised with democracy-related themes in Canada and Cambodia. NSHC assesses SectorA activity as aimed at collecting political, diplomatic, and government-related intelligence connected to Korea while also pursuing financially motivated operations globally.
