North Korean Hackers Target macOS Users with New Malware Variant Disguised as Video Call Service
2024-07-22 • Foresiet •
North Korean state sponsored hackers used a fake Microtalk video calling service to deliver an updated BeaverTail infostealer to macOS users. The lure appears designed around job interview preparation, persuading victims to download software even though the cloned site claimed no download was needed to start a call. Once installed, BeaverTail steals sensitive data and can execute additional payloads, including InvisibleFerret. Patrick Wardle's analysis cited in the source frames the campaign as social engineering heavy rather than technically novel, with macOS users targeted through convincing service impersonation.
