North Korea-linked hackers carried out more individual cryptocurrency hacks in 2023 than in any prior year Chainalysis tracked, even as total stolen funds fell from 2022 levels. The source estimates $428.8 million stolen from DeFi platforms, $330.9 million from exchanges, $150.0 million from centralized services, and $127.0 million from wallet providers by North Korea-linked actors. Chainalysis contrasts that activity with the wider decline in DeFi losses, which dropped 63.7% year over year, and describes phishing, compromised servers, wallet hacks, protocol exploitation, insider abuse, and contagion as relevant attack-vector categories.
