DMM Bitcoin to Shut Down After $305M Hack; Will Transfer Accounts to SBI VC
2024-12-02 • Coin Desk •
Japanese exchange DMM Bitcoin said it will shut down and transfer accounts and assets to SBI VC Trade in March 2025 after a May 2024 hack drained 4,502.9 BTC, worth about $305 million at the time. DMM had restricted withdrawals and spot purchase orders after the theft and said continuing those restrictions would harm customers. The source says attribution remains unclear, though Lazarus Group has been suggested, and notes that funds from the hack appear to have passed through Huione Guarantee. SBI VC Trade planned to support 14 spot crypto assets already handled by DMM before the transfer.
