The Justice Department charged Nashville resident Matthew Isaac Knoot for allegedly helping North Korean IT workers obtain remote jobs at U.S. and U.K. companies under a stolen U.S. identity. Prosecutors say Knoot hosted a laptop farm at his residences, installed unauthorized remote access software on employer laptops, and made the workers appear to be operating from Nashville while they worked from China. The scheme allegedly generated more than $250,000 per worker, caused victim media, technology, and financial companies over $500,000 in response costs, and laundered payments to accounts tied to North Korean and Chinese actors. The case fits DOJ's DPRK RevGen focus on domestic enablers that support North Korea's sanctions evasion and weapons funding.
