Chainalysis reported that OFAC sanctioned six individuals and two entities tied to DPRK IT worker fraud schemes that generated nearly $800 million in 2024 for North Korea’s weapons programs. The schemes used fraudulent documents, stolen identities, and fabricated personas to place North Korean workers inside legitimate companies, while wages were routed back to the regime. Cryptocurrency was a key payment and laundering channel, including Nguyen Quang Viet’s alleged conversion of about $2.5 million for North Koreans and designated Ethereum, Tron, and Bitcoin addresses tied to Amnokgang, Yun Song Guk, Hoang Minh Quang, and Sim Hyon Sop. The designations show DPRK operators using a multi-chain financial infrastructure and mainstream crypto services, making sanctions screening and IT worker fraud detection important for exchanges, hosted wallets, DeFi services, bridges, and employers.
