Ukrainian National Sentenced in ‘Laptop Farm’ Scheme That Generated Income for North Korean IT Workers

The U.S. Attorney's Office reported that Oleksandr Didenko was sentenced to 60 months for helping North Korean IT workers obtain fraudulent remote employment using stolen U.S. identities. Court documents say Didenko operated Upworksell.com, managed as many as 871 proxy identities, and facilitated at least three U.S.-based laptop farms in Virginia, Tennessee, and California. The scheme enabled overseas IT workers to appear domestic, obtain jobs at 40 U.S. companies through freelance platforms, and route income through money service transmitters and foreign bank accounts. The case matters for DPRK tracking because it documents identity, laptop-farm, and financial infrastructure used to generate revenue for North Korea while exposing U.S. companies to insider and data-risk concerns.
