Ukrainian Pleads Guilty in DC in Laptop Farm Scheme That Generated Income for North Korean IT Workers

Oleksandr Didenko pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft for operating Upworksell.com, a service that sold or rented stolen and borrowed U.S. identities to overseas IT workers including North Koreans. The scheme enabled IT workers to obtain freelance contracts at about 40 U.S. companies through online work platforms while falsely reporting income under real U.S. victims' names. Didenko managed as many as 871 proxy identities, paid U.S.-based hosts for laptop farms in Virginia, Tennessee, and California, and helped overseas clients access U.S. money service transmitters to move earnings abroad. The case shows how DPRK IT worker operations depend on identity marketplaces, laptop farms, and remote access arrangements to appear domestic and monetize U.S. employment channels.
